Strainers are often used as the first interception in the water harvest from a roof.  They are not always needed.  We suggest using a leaf eater or leaf beater strainer should the roofs you are harvesting water from have trees close by shedding needles or leaves.  The strainer should be mounted low enough on the building to facilitate cleaning.
